Maryland based Oculis Labs, a specialist in data security and Tobii partner has two interesting products out that protect your computer screens from people reading over your shoulder. The high-end Chameleon is primarily targeted at government agencies who require high-level security for on-screen reading, following your gaze pattern and only making the text around your fixation point readable.

At the same time the consumer oriented PrivatEye will blur the screen when the user looks away from the screen.

To solve it set it back to normal dpi (96 dpi).

In XP please right-click on the desktop and go to "(Display) Properties". Then in the "Settings" tab go to "Advanced". You can change the dpi settings here.

No visualizations after a web-recording

Some users are astonished to find that, after doing a web-recording, there are no images of the website in the Visualization section.

Solution: Check that the Tobii Studio Add-on in Internet Explorer is enabled. You can do this in IE under Tools->Manage Add-Ons->Enable or Disable Add-Ons. It is called BrowserBHO Object by Tobii Technology.

Colored Dots in Timeline

The colored dots in the timeline represent a recording. They depict the moment this specific recording was ended.

Empty Media List after recording avi, screen or external video

After recording dynamic content (screen recording, avi, external video) you need to remember to create scenes. Scenes are required to be able to use the visualization tools with dynamic content. Please refer to the Tobii Studio Manual (Segment 6.6. in Tobii Studio Manual, version 1.0).

How to manually change the background image for webrecordings

Sometimes, users would like to change the (background) image of a webrecording.

Just like in the scene tool (used with screen recordings or video stimuli) where it is necessary to change the moment in time of when the scene image is taken, users find it necessary to exchange the background image of the webrecording. A common reason could be that a flash banner has not loaded yet or shows a "wrong" image at the time this snapshot was taken.

You will need to manually take a snapshot of the website with a tool such as SnagIt.

Next, go to the WebImages folder in the database folder of Tobii Studio. You can find the folder path in Tobii Studio, Settings, Miscellaneous. By default this folder is C:\ProgramData\Tobii\Studio in Windows Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Tobii\Studio in Windows XP.

Identify the image that you would like replaced. Should you have too many (similar) images in this folder to make identifying it an easy task you can do a text export (all data) on a recording with the image. In the column WebGroupImage you will find the unique filename for this image. Double-check the resolution of this image. It is important that the manually created snapshot image to replace the original image in the Tobii Studio database folder have the same resolution. You might have to reduce the image size to the correct size. You can do this in any image editing software (MS Paint, MS Office Picture Manager, Photoshop etc).

Rename the new image to the exact same name as the original image. Since it is quite a long and random filename, this is best done via copy&paste.

Move the new image to the WebGroupImage folder, replacing the old image.

This new image will now appear in visualization.

How to record a study on several eyetrackers and merge the data

In Tobii Studio Recordings and tests in a project can be merged if the project is created on one computer and thereafter exported. This project must then be imported to every PC that will record eyetracking data. It is not possible to merge projects created on different computers in Tobii Studio, even if you design two studies with the same stimuli in the same order!
The reason for this is that Tobii Studio creates randomly generated file names of stimuli when imported into the database to uniquely distinguish them.

To merge recordings from different computers into one test or project follow the steps below:

Create a study in Tobii Studio on one computer

Export the study by going to File, Export and Import.

Import the study to one or several other computers

Run the study (record) on the different computers. Make sure to use different names for the recordings on the different computers to be able to differentiate between recordings once the studies are merged. Do not change the name of the study or test.

Export the study from all computers except the one where the analysis is to take place.

Import the study from the other computers to the analysis computer. This is done in Tobii Studio under File, Export and Import.

Many customers have difficulties using the extended dual screen setup.

The Straightforward Dual Screen Setup

You can find a step-by-step description of the standard dual screen setup in the Tobii Manual, p.93/94. Basically, you will set the Tobii Display as primary screen and extend the desktop onto the "regular" (non Tobii) display which is defined as secondary screen. Tobii Studio should then start up on the Tobii display, just as the track viewer window and Live Viewer should.

When using an extended, dual-screen setup you will move the Live Viewer (and Track Status window if you like).

Unexpected Behaviour

In some rare cases, despite setting up the Eye Tracking unit as the primary monitor in a dual-monitor setup, when starting to record a test the stimuli will appear on the secondary, regular monitor. In these rare setups the system differentiates between Tobii Studio being launched on the primary monitor (i.e. the Eye Tracker) and the secondary monitor.

The solution to this problem is to "force" Tobii Studio to be launched on the primary monitor (the Eye Tracker) by placing a desktop shortcut of the Tobii Studio application on the Eye-Tracker's desktop and double-clicking that. The Splash-Screen that immediately appears when you start Tobii Studio is usually a good indication of where Tobii Studio is starting. Your goal is to get it to appear on the Tobii Eye-Tracker monitor.

Going single again: Where did my Track Status window and/or Live Viewer go?

Not being able to open the Track Status and/or the Live Viewer after reverting to a single screen setup from a dual screen setup is something some users experience. The pop up windows are most likely not "gone" but rather just placed in the background or off-screen.

To gain access to them again, you will need to go to "Settings". Navigate to the "Miscellaneous" tab. Select "Forget Live Viewer window position". Voilá!

The Tobii Support Blog

I thought it was high time to open up a communication channel. A means to share ideas, tips & tricks, gossip. Whenever a member of the Support Team visits you, our valued clients, we leave with the impression that besides all the tech talk and consultation, the single biggest value is having had the opportunity to establish a more personal connection.

Thinking of ways to make this more permanent, more scalable and to establish a more personal connection with a much greater reach, I decided to start blogging.

In this blog the Tobii Support Team would like to share with you solutions to common questions and advanced tricks to make the best out of Tobii equipment, and whatever the Tobii Support Team is involved with.
